You’re three slides into the lesson and the room has gone quiet. A few phones have appeared under desks. A couple of students are looking at the slide, but you can tell they’re not really reading it.

The deck isn’t the problem. The content isn’t the problem. What’s missing is anything on screen that asks your students to do something other than sit there.

That gap matters more in 2026 than it did even two years ago. An AI summary of any lesson is one tap away. If your slides only ask students to receive, they’re competing with a tool that does it better.

This guide is about how to make an interactive PowerPoint that holds attention again. Not by adding more bullets or fancier transitions, but by giving students moments where the deck stops talking and starts asking.

What makes a PowerPoint interactive?

An interactive PowerPoint is a presentation that responds to the audience. Instead of static slides delivering information one way, an interactive deck lets viewers click, drag, answer questions, vote, type responses, or move through the content on their own path. The deck reacts. The audience participates.

Two Types of Interactive PowerPoint Presentations

Two types of interactivity: slide content + audience

There are two kinds of interactivity to think about, and most decks are missing one of them.

Slide-level interactivity is built into the deck itself. None of this needs an external tool, PowerPoint does it all:

  • Animations that trigger on click
  • Hyperlinks that jump between slides
  • Draggable objects
  • Morph transitions
  • Zoom navigation

Audience-level interactivity brings the viewers in. This usually needs an add-in (we’ll cover the main options later in the guide):

  • Live polls answered from phones
  • Quiz questions everyone responds to at once
  • Word clouds and Q&A submissions
  • Group activities and gradable assessments

A truly interactive lesson uses both. Slide-level keeps the deck visually alive. Audience-level keeps the room mentally awake.

Why interactive presentations work

The case for interactive teaching comes from two places: decades of classroom research, and what teachers see in their own rooms when they make the switch.

What the research says

Students in active-learning classrooms perform measurably better than students in lecture-only classes, and the effect shows up across disciplines, class sizes, and student populations.

Earlier meta-analyses looked at this in undergraduate STEM courses, where the content is dense with theory and the lecture is still the default mode of teaching.

Even there, active learning came out ahead. Exam scores climbed about 6 percentage points on average when classes shifted from lecture to active learning. Students in lecture-only classes were 1.5 times more likely to fail.

2026 study published in Nature Physics tested multiple types of active learning in undergraduate physics courses and confirmed the same direction, with measurable gains in conceptual understanding plus lower failure rates across every method tested.

In short, interactivity worked then, and it still works now.

When students participate, they score better. When they don’t, attention drifts toward whatever screen is closer to their hands.

Why interactivity matters more in the AI era

Here’s the thing about teaching in 2026: information isn’t scarce anymore. Your students can ask an AI for a summary of any topic, in seconds, from their phones.

The thing they’re actually short on isn’t information. It’s a reason to look up from those phones and engage with you.

That’s what makes interactivity matter more than it used to. The teacher’s job used to be delivering information. Now it’s helping students make sense of it together, and that second part is harder for a chatbot to outsource.

When your deck only asks students to receive, an AI summary is a fair substitute. When it asks students to vote, click, drag, or explain themselves, it offers something the AI can’t.

Case studies: Two real classrooms

What this looks like in practice, in two real classrooms. The first did it with PowerPoint alone. The second ran the same idea across hundreds of students with an add-in.

A Grade 8 literature class in the Philippines

At Banisil National High School in the Philippines, two Grade 8 literature classes of 30 students started a two-month unit at the same below-proficiency baseline, with pre-test means of 19.9 and 19.77. One was taught with a standard deck. The other used interactive PowerPoint, with animations and visual aids built into a lesson sequence that asked students to apply what they were reading and share their own interpretations of each text, all using native PowerPoint features.

By post-test, the interactive class had nearly doubled their pre-test mean, climbing to 38.77. The standard-deck class also improved but only reached 27.67, still below the proficiency mark. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (p = 0.0001).

Scaling to 800 students at Hong Kong Polytechnic University

A peer-reviewed study at Hong Kong Polytechnic ran the same kind of experiment in a compulsory first-year English course taken by around 800 students a year, with ClassPoint embedded as the interactive layer inside the lecturer’s PowerPoint slides.

The biggest shift wasn’t that participation rose. It was who was participating. With responses collected anonymously through polls and short-answer activities, the researchers found the live format “prevented a narrow group of more confident students from dominating class discussion whilst enabling quieter and passive learners to share their thoughts more freely.”

The instructor’s role didn’t shrink; it shifted, from prompting reluctant responses to interpreting the ones already on screen. Same move as the Grade 8 class in the Philippines, just at a much bigger scale: ask students to do something instead of just receive.

Before presenting: prep the deck

This chapter covers the deck-prep work that happens before you start the slideshow. Most of these techniques use only what PowerPoint already gives you. The last section, on AI, brings in a few tools that can speed up the setup.

You don’t need all of these to teach interactively. Pick the techniques that serve your lesson and skip the rest. The audience-response layer, which is where most interactivity actually happens, is covered in the next chapter, so polish here is genuinely optional.

1. Use animations with purpose

Animations are the first thing most people reach for when they want a slide to feel interactive. They’re also the easiest to overdo. The trick is asking what each one is for before you add it.

A line of text that slides in to emphasize a turning point in the lesson is doing real work. A title that wipes across the slide because PowerPoint offered the option is not.

A useful rule: if removing the animation would change how the slide is understood, keep it. If removing it would only change how the slide looks, cut it.

If your subject calls for visuals that move (a biology lesson on insects, a geography lesson on a planet, an art class on a sculpture), PowerPoint’s built-in 3D model library is a good example of animations that earn their place. Go to Insert → 3D Models → Stock 3D Models and drop one into a slide. Each model has motion built in.

If your subject doesn’t need that kind of visual, skip this entirely. A clear diagram and a good question can do more for engagement than any animation.

2. Pop-ups with triggers (advanced option, mostly skippable)

PowerPoint’s triggers feature lets you turn a shape into a clickable button that reveals hidden content on the same slide (a map marker that opens a date, a quote phrase that reveals a definition). The setup runs through the Animation Pane and is fiddly. For most teaching moments, a follow-on slide or a live ClassPoint question is faster.

3. Use Zoom for non-linear lesson navigation

PowerPoint’s Summary Zoom turns a non-linear lesson into a clickable navigation slide, useful for unit decks where you want to move between an agenda, individual topics, and a review without scrolling. Go to Insert → Zoom → Summary Zoom and pick your sections. (Right-click between slides to Add Section first if your deck doesn’t have them yet.) Slide Zoom and Section Zoom do the same at smaller scope.

4. Add PowerPoint Morph

PowerPoint Morph creates smooth visual transitions between slides: a shape that moves across the screen, a diagram that builds, an image that zooms in as you teach. Unlike standard animations, it works across two slides: place the same object on both, apply Morph as the transition, and PowerPoint handles the movement.

Hyperlinks aren’t just for opening websites. They let you teach out of order without losing the room: jump back to a slide students struggled with, or open the unit’s menu without scrolling.

A quick distinction before the details: triggers (above) reveal content on the slide you’re already on. Hyperlinks take you somewhere else, like another slide in your deck. Use triggers for “show more here.” Use hyperlinks for “jump to there.” Below, we’ll show you two ways every teacher will reach for.

Ways to use PowerPoint hyperlinks

1. Jump to a specific slide

Select any text, shape, or image, go to Insert → Link → Place in This Document, and pick the slide you want to jump to. Useful for “if students struggle, jump back to slide 6” kind of moments, without scrolling through the deck mid-lesson.

2. Build a navigation menu

Put a menu on slide 1 or slide 2 with the unit’s main sections, and hyperlink each menu item to the right starting slide. Now you can decide on the fly what order to teach in, or revisit a section based on what the room actually needs.

This pairs well with Section Zoom (above) if you want a visual menu. Stick with plain hyperlinks if you want a clean text-based one.

Speed up deck prep with AI: Copilot, Designer, and ClassPoint AI

Most of this chapter is about features PowerPoint has had for years, but this one is different. Two AI tools for teachers can save real time on lesson prep.

These tools don’t compete. They sit at different steps of building a deck, and they’re strongest when used together.

Microsoft Copilot: draft the deck

Copilot generates a starter deck from a single prompt. For example: “Create a 10-slide lesson about this document / lesson [attach document].” It’s a first draft, not a final deck. You’ll still tighten the wording and check the facts, since Copilot can fill in plausible-looking content that isn’t quite right.

Copilot for PowerPoint isn’t part of every Microsoft 365 setup, so check what your school has access to before you rely on it.

ClassPoint AI: add the interactive layer

1. Turn slides into interactive quizzes

3. Add live polls and word clouds

Polls and word clouds gather student thinking without requiring a “right answer.” A poll takes the temperature of the room: “How confident do you feel about quadratics so far?” A word cloud surfaces the words students associate with a topic, with bigger words showing what came up most often. Post the cloud to the slide and the room watches it take shape together.

  • Use a poll when you want a clear count: votes, opinions, confidence checks.
  • Use a word cloud when you want patterns of language: vocabulary, brainstorms, descriptions of a character or process.

4. Make objects draggable

Draggable objects let you move shapes, images, or text around your slides during the slideshow. PowerPoint normally locks objects in place once you press present. ClassPoint’s draggable objects unlock them.

5. Annotate during slideshow

Annotations are the closest thing PowerPoint has to writing on the whiteboard. Both PowerPoint and ClassPoint give you tools that work in slideshow mode.

  • PowerPoint: click the pencil icon in the bottom-right of the slideshow window for a pen, highlighter, or laser pointer.

With this function, you can circle the key term as you say it, underline the line students often misread, and sketch the next step of the process while explaining it.

6. Play games and gamify with points and leaderboards

Gamification means adding one or two competitive elements to the lesson, not turning the lesson into a game. ClassPoint awards stars when students answer correctly, and you can award stars manually for participation, effort, or a strong answer.

One caution: keep the questions doing the teaching work but let the points add fun, not become the goal.

7. Group students for breakouts

ClassPoint gives you two ways to split a class into groups, depending on how structured you want the breakout to be.

For pre-assigned, persistent groups, use the dedicated Grouping feature. Open the My Class window in your PowerPoint ribbon, pick a saved class, and click Grouping.

From there, pick students manually (for table groups, project teams, or mixed-ability pairs) or set the number of students per group and let ClassPoint auto-group for you. Groups stick to the class, so the same teams come back next lesson without setting them up again.

  • Slide-level interactivity (animations, Zoom, hyperlinks) needs nothing beyond PowerPoint.
  • Audience-response interactivity needs students with a phone or browser, with no app, account, or download.
  • Hybrid lessons are the same setup as in-person, not a separate one. Students join the same way regardless of where they’re sitting.

What it does require is patience. The classrooms that change don’t change overnight. The shift shows up across a unit, not across a single lesson, which means picking a technique you can actually commit to running for that long.

  • Pick one slide where you’d normally ask “does that make sense?”
